Foreign nationals in Peru who have applied for a visa - more precisely, for a change of immigration status (cambio de calidad migratoria) - or a change of visa type (cambio de clase de visa) as well as those who have applied for an extension of their residence visa, may only leave the country during the processing period with a special travel permit.
This permit is commonly referred to as Travel permit, Permiso especial de viaje in Spanish, or as Autorización de estadía fuera del país por 30 días.
If you leave Peru while your application is still pending without this permit, your visa or visa extension application becomes null and void, regardless of how far along the process was.
While for many years this authorization had to be requested in person at a Migraciones office, the procedure has since been simplified. Today, the travel permit can be applied for quickly and easily online via the Migraciones Agencia Digital.
