Attached to the Ministry of Environment, the Peruvian Institute of Geophysics (IGP) is a public research institution in charge of investigating, monitoring and generating knowledge in the field of geophysics, in order to anticipate and reduce the destructive impact of natural or human-induced hazards.
As Peru is located in an area of high seismic and volcanic activity - in addition to being vulnerable to climate changes - the primary function of the Geophysical Institute of Peru is to study all phenomena related to the structure, physical conditions and evolutionary history of the Earth including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, droughts, huaycos and landslides.
