 Coin Front & Back

The Anchoveta is a fish of the anchovy family and regularly caught on the coasts of Peru. The anchoveta was chosen as one of the motives for the Numismatic Series "Natural Resources of Peru". The front of the coin shows as you might have figured out two anchovies and a Moche Culture representation (everyday marine life) as a homage to the importance of the natural resource already in ancient Peru. The scientific name of the anchoveta (Engraulis Ringens) is imprinted above. As with all current 1 Nuevo Sol coins on the back you have the Peruvian Coat of Arms.

Until about 2005 the anchoveta was almost exclusively used for making fishmeal, and Peru produces some of the highest quality fishmeal in the world. Since 2005 anchoveta is increasingly used for direct human consumption, as fresh fish, as canned fish or as salted-matured fillets packed in oil.

This coin is a legal tender and not thought to be a replacement for the current S /. 1.00 coins. It will circulate simultaneously and can be used in any transaction. Since 2010 there have been quite a number of collectible coins issued by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru with monetary value (see also the "Wealth and Pride of Peru" Numismatic Series).
