Labor Day - Dia de los Trabajadores Peru

Labor Day - Dia de los Trabajadores Peru

01 May

As in many countries around the globe, Peru commemorates the labor movement and the achievement of workers’ rights on May 1.

The Peruvian Labor Day was established as official public holiday in 1905 during the presidency of José Pardo y Barreda, after the first employment laws regulating the work of women and children, free Sundays, holidays and work accidents were introduced.

Today most people in Peru enjoy the public holiday to relax and spend time with their families and friends. Especially in Lima however labor unions such as the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) organize demonstrations in which their members and workers take part demanding once again principle workers' rights that over the past two decades declined because of Peru's neoliberal policies.
