The Teatro Maguey, one of the most important theater groups in the country, was founded in 1982 as a theatrical research and production workshop. Renowned for their alternative view on theater and great artistic solidity, their current work includes the broad artistic field, the creation and production of shows including performances, research, theater pedagogy and community projects for social transformation.
The main objective of the Teatro Maguey, who considers itself “a theatrical laboratory characterized by a multidisciplinary and transcultural proposal, permanently linked to the contributions of popular culture and social processes”, was since its beginnings and still is offering a space where all age groups can develop identity, imagination, creativity, expressiveness and communication skills through art and play.
Throughout the year, Maguey presents plays and shows open to the general public for adults, teens, and children in the traditional theatrical environment, but also in unconventional places. The group as well performs for colleges and universities and at special events such as cultural fairs and festivals in Peru and abroad.
The Maguey Theater is well-known far beyond the Peruvian borders and not only performs regularly in different Latin American and European countries but as well exchanges views and experiences and cooperates with like-minded groups worldwide.
A great part of the work of the Maguey group are workshops, professional training and seminars offering an alternative to a traditional acting training and a space for personal and professional development. These include:
- A theater school for kids and teens encompassing theater, psychomotricity, music, stilts, and the plastic arts.
- Lunanueva, a laboratory school dedicated to the professional training of creative actors and playwrights
