 Coin Front & Back

Peru and cacao share an age old relationship. To no surprise Cacao was chosen for this coin of the Numismatic Series "Natural Resources of Peru". The front of the coin shows a cacao tree and some fruits. Engraved on the top of the coin you'll also find its scientific name: Theobroma Cacao. As with all current 1 Nuevo Sol coins on the back you have the Peruvian Coat of Arms.

Although the debate is still open about the origin of the cacao tree, the strongest theses confirm that it originated in the tropical Andes foothills, in the Amazonas and Orinoco. Once domesticated in Ancient Peru, it was a fundamental element in previous cultures and their rituals. The main growing regions in Peru are: Tumbes and Piura on the coast; Amazonas, San Martín and Ucayali in the Amazon region; and the rainforest areas in Cajamarca, Huánuco, Junín Ayacucho and Cusco.

This coin is a legal tender and not thought to be a replacement for the current S /. 1.00 coins. It will circulate simultaneously and can be used in any transaction. Since 2010 there have been quite a number of collectible coins issued by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru with monetary value (see also the "Wealth and Pride of Peru" Numismatic Series).
