With the civil protests in Peru, there seven cities where tourists should not travel because they would be at risk. The country has updated the status of these cities where the riots are taking place and has indicated that traveling there would not be recommendable for the time being.
Among these cities are especially those in the southern part of the South American country. Included in the listing are the regions and cities of Cusco, Paracas, Ica, Puno, Apurímac, Ayacucho and Arequipa. Based on this, the United States embassy in Lima has classified the situation in Peru as a Level 3 risk, asking its citizens to reconsider their trips to these particular destinations.
To minimize the risks, the Peruvian authorities have created a Visitor Protection Network together with the Peruvian Tourist Police. Likewise, it established safe travel corridors, which go from the airports to the historic centers of cities such as Cusco, Arequipa, Puno and Tacna.
The social rebellion in southern Peru against the government of Dina Boluarte is definitely scaring away the little tourism that remained in the country after the coup d'état carried out by ex-president Pedro del Castillo at the beginning of December. And that at time where the country was slowly recovering from the impact of the Covid epidemic. Faced with the crisis, the Ministry of Culture, which manages Machu Picchu, has closed the place to tourist visits, to guarantee the safety of travelers.
