Don’t Drive Here – Lima

Don’t Drive Here – Lima

TV Episode from the Don't Drive Here Series in 2013

Discovery Channel (c)

Don’t Drive Here was a reality television series with 2 seasons and 12 episodes. It aired on Discovery Channel Canada and was hosted by Andrew Younghusband. The series was a follow-up to Canada’s Worst Driver. In August 2015, it was announced that they had not renewed the show for a third season.

Each one-hour episode featured Younghusband in a different country completing driving challenges in one of “the world’s worst driving cities”, with the goal of learning to drive better than a local professional driver. Cities featured in the first season of the show included Delhi, India; Bangkok, Thailand; Mexico City, Mexico; Manila, Philippines; Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; and Lima, Peru. Cities featured in the second season included Nairobi, Kenya; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; La Paz, Bolivia; Rome, Italy; and São Paulo, Brazil.

In the episode about Lima, the vehicular chaos in the capitol of Peru was exposed. There were many controversy discussions in the press and public, even though everyone had to agree that it was a genuine reflection of the daily conditions. The mayor of Lima (at that time) - Susana Villarán - mentioned that she really liked the documentary – a fact that caused public outrage because of the shown criticism in the documentary about the insufficient work of the Peruvian Traffic Police, insufficient technical vehicle inspections and the easiness of passing the test for the drivers’ exam.

We could not hold back to write up our own point of view – read more in “Driving in Lima - Not for the faint-hearted” (Peruvian combination of “demolition derby” and a “game of chicken”). Includes our personal interpretation of traffic rules. Please do not take this seriously!

Best watch the documentary.
