Coin Front & Back

The 17th coin of the Peruvian Wealth & Pride series has been put into circulation on the 6th of August 2014. The front shows a characteristic, beautifully decorated wall of the Temple of the Moon (Huaca de la Luna) built by the Moche culture in northern Peru. The temple belongs to the archaeological site of "The Temple of the Sun and of the Moon" (Huaca del Sol y de la Luna) located close to Trujillo.

The complex is believed to have been the most important urban and ceremonial center of the Moche culture. While the impressive Temple of the Sun was the largest adobe structure in the Americas (unfortunately today only about 30% of the original stucture is preserved), the smaller Temple of the Moon impresses with its beautiful architecture of three platforms, various plazas and large ceremonial spaces that were built over centuries. Stunning as well are the mural paintings.

The back of the coin shows in the center part the Peruvian Coat of Arms surrounded by the writing Central Reserve Bank of Peru (Banco Central de Reserva del Perú) and the year of issue. This side of the coin is nearly identical to the previous issued S /. 1.00 coins that have been in circulation.
