In April 2011 the Museum of Peruvian Gastronomy (Museo de la Gastronomia Peruana) opened its doors to the public. It’s the first museum in Peru dedicated exclusively to the Peruvian cuisine which plays such an important role not only in the culture of the country but as well in everyday life. The Gastronomy Museum leads you through more than 2000 years of culinary richness in Peru.

Located in the old Post Office building (Casa de Correos y Telegrafos) just a few meters from Lima’s main square, the Plaza de Armas, the museum introduces its visitors to the amazing history of Peruvian cuisine. Taking the three geographical regions of Peru with their huge biodiversity and the culinary influences of immigrants into consideration, the Museum of Peruvian Gastronomy explains the history and development of Peruvian cuisine as well as the fusion of different flavors of four continents which make Peruvian food to what it is today.

The exhibition is completed by nice life-sized remakes of cooking scenes; for example the preparation of a Pachamanca in the Andean mountains, a bakery in Colonial Lima, street vendors or a modern Pollo a la Brasa stand (Peruvian Charcoal Chicken). Additionally the Museo de la Gastronomia consists of a multimedia room that project reports and interviews with celebrity chefs speaking of the richness of Peruvian cuisine and a room for temporary exhibitions related to Peruvian food. And last but not least don’t miss the Sala de Pisco, a room exclusively dedicated to Peru’s national beverage, the Pisco, and its production process.
